Still-life is perhaps my favorite genre of painting. It is here I celebrate the part of me that has spent a lot if time in the kitchen. Once upon a time, I was speaking to an young art student and he jokingly quoted a stereotype that went something like this, “Hello - you’re an artist? What restaurant do you work at?” I was horrified because, at the time, I worked in a restaurant. Indeed, I was struggling to make my art. As consolation to myself, I referred to my work as culinary art and yet during those years I was haunted by compositions that lingered in my mind’s eye inspired by the fruits and vegetables that lay in brilliant arrangements on the cutting block.
